Along with other equality-centric organizations, GLAD recently applauded the efforts of the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles to make accommodations for nonbinary gender designations on driver’s licenses and other state-issued forms of identification. The move comes after a Maine resident filed a grievance with the state’s Human Rights Commission concerning the lack of other gender options.
Those wishing to update their existing Maine licenses can fill out a Gender Designation Form to receive a sticker reading, “Gender has been changed to X - Non-binary.” Beginning in mid-2019, the “X” option will be available alongside “M” and “F” as a gender designation on all newly issued licenses and state identification cards.
